The Smiling Peanut (13 ft. high) was sent to Plains by Democratic Friends, Loretta Townsend, Doyle Kifer, and James Kiley of Evansville, IN.

They made the peanut from wooden hoops, chicken wire, aluminum foil and polyurethane. After the "peanut" textured outside was finished; it was painted a peanut color. It is known worldwide and has been featured on the game show Jeopardy.

Today, the smiling peanut has been weatherized and set outside on highway 45N about one-half mile from the original Jimmy Carter Campaign Headquarters at the town train depot.

Come visit! The smiling peanut is always posed for the next picture.
